Excerpt from Chapter 3 of Stay Above the Line by Dr. Diana Morgan
The events of Genesis 3 distorted man’s view of reality. Sin has a kaleidoscopic effect on man’s ability to see through the lens of spiritual truth, the Word of God. A kaleidoscope begins with an array of the most immaculate colors all layered in harmonious and picturesque patterns that cannot be replicated by any man. Future patterns formed by the kaleidoscope also form colorful, vibrant, and symmetrical patterns equally as complex as the original, but the newly formed shapes and hues are a misrepresentation of the original design. This metaphor is indicative of what happened in Genesis 3. In the beginning, man functioned like deity, seeing the world through a spiritual lens and having total dominion and power to transform anything that was in disarray. After the Fall, his lens became skewed; although things looked vibrant and pleasurable, they were a complex and deceptive misrepresentation of the original design.
Since that fateful Garden experience, man has been upside down in thinking, speaking, and behaving; nor can he see things as they actually are. His kaleidoscope changed the scenery, and he cannot be certain that what he sees is what really exists.
In the beginning, man’s thoughts and views captured only pure Holiness through the lens of the Master Designer. Man experienced everything as good as he was in subjection to God. Sin had not distorted man’s view or his nature Nor had any other creation suffered. God had turned the world over to man to rule and reign in much the same way that He rules in heaven. However, man’s disobedience turned the world upside down.
After Genesis 1 and 2, man’s orientation became inverted. He was designed to operate from the inside out, that is, spirit, soul, and body. Man’s spirit was originally in the lead position and was in perfect communion with the Spirit of God. This was the only way that man could see through the same lens as God. Because God is a Spirit, so must man commune with God through his own spirit. After the fall of man, he became ruled from the outside in: body, soul, and spirit. Man then began to function by doing what he felt was right in his own eyes and not necessarily after the will of God. This changed man’s lens and distorted his view of reality.
As a result of sin, all creation was cursed, and man now knew of two systems, one good and one evil. Immediately, he lost his heavenly view and position. The problem, however, was that it was difficult for man to see how much his lens had changed without the help of the Holy Spirit. Further, with the introduction of the Old Testament Law, man not only saw good and evil and developed a sin nature, but he also developed a sin consciousness as opposed to the original righteous consciousness. This is depicted in Genesis 3 when the man and woman who were once robed in the righteousness of God suddenly discovered they were naked and hid themselves.
And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked. (Genesis 3:7)
